Is it absolutely necessary to use the actex/asm study manual to prepare for the exams?

I want to start preparing for exam P/1 however, I'm currently not in possession of a study manual, but I have the topics covered in the actex manual (gained from the sample I downloaded). I was thinking of looking up the topics in an ordinary statistics text until I can get the manual. Is this advisable or should I wait for a few weeks until I can get the manual?

yea man, you can learn this stuff from a textbook. The manuals are good because they expose you to tons of exam style questions. I recommend a study guide because it keeps you focused on exactly what you need to know. There is a set of 123 sample questions on the SOA website. A good way to start is to go through each of those using your book as a reference.

How are the archived exams in difficulty relative to current exams? The archived ones don't seem that tough.

OK i am a Dr. Ostaszewski champion....He has some problems from 1983 and alot of his problems are difficult....although some I wonder will this kinda problem be on the exam or is he just flexing his mental muscle
