View Full Version : Rejecting internship then applying full-time?

I currently have two internship offers at Insurance companies in the city I'd like to live in.

One of them is a smaller health company. In the past, they have given half the interns full-time jobs after the internship.

The other is a bigger, very well-known public life insurance company. They have given about 75% of their interns full-time jobs after the internship.

Even after giving it much thought, I can't decide between the two. The smaller company has better benefits and Actuaries in the company advance quicker. However, there are more opportunities for Life Actuaries and the bigger company is very well known nationally.

If I decide to intern with the bigger company, I feel like the smaller one won't bother with me for full-time (If I don't get a full-time offer at the bigger company). I feel like this isn't true for vice versa, since the bigger company might not remember me and they seem to also hire entry level students that haven't interned with them.

What are your thoughts on this and which would you pick/reject? (BTW The bigger company flew me in for an on-site interview, the smaller one only had a phone interview)

There aren't many insurance companies in the city.. and I'd like to reduce the risk of being unemployed after I graduate.

Please help me decide and figure out a good way to reject the other offer.. Thank you!!

I would go for the best. Why settle for a smaller company when you have the chance to learn so much more? Besides, having a well-known company on your resume would make you an attractive candidate in the future. You have the talent to get two intern offers already, I'm sure you wont have any problem finding a full time job by the time you graduate.

Or you can try to bargain for a full time offer with the smaller company? Not sure if this is a good idea though.. See if anyone else have any suggestions.

Good luck!
