It could be either - depending on how the annuity is structured.

For exam purposes, what do the Actuarial symbols a_x and a_x:nŻ| denote?
i think they denote streams of payments only as long as the person is alive, but i just want to make sure.

Thanks

In general, I don't think you get an annuity payment unless you're alive at the point where you're supposed to receive payment.

a_x is an annuity paid at the end of each year until death.
a_x:n¯| is an n-year temporary annuity paid at the end of each year until death or n years, whichever comes first.
