I'm currently studying independently for the SOA exams. I wrote Exam P in May, and plan to write Exam FM in the fall and repeat Exam P if necessary. I only recently decided to pursue this career; I graduated from uni in May 2004 with a degree in physics and a minor in math (theoretical math, not statistics or anything useful).

Whilst studying, I need to work - but I am not qualified for any actuarial positions as yet, as I have not passed exams and have no specific experience. Rather than do what I've been doing (admin work for a mental health clinic and nannying), I'd like to search for a job that might help me in my future applications for actuarial positions. I would be working from anytime after mid-July until I manage to obtain an actuarial position (sometime after the fall exam results are posted, if I pass ... after Spring 06 if I need another go).

Can anyone advise me as to what types of jobs might at least lead me in the right direction? I'll be in London, UK if that makes a difference. I have excellent computer skills, strong knowledge of MS Excel, Word, Access, basic programming knowledge (Java, some C++) and am an excellent communicator and team player.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!

I am no expert, just someone considering becoming an Actuary as well, but it sounds like you could find a job that uses some of your computer skills. Maybe find a 6-12 month contract in IT. The only problem may be that they could work you to death, leaving you little time to study.

I would suggest trying to find a job within an insurance company. They are always looking for people with strong math and computer skills and if you become succesful with your exams, it will become easier to jump into the actuarial programs. I know several individuals who were in your shoes and both became underwriters for 12 to 18 months. When they had passed 3 exams, they were placed in an actuarial analyst role and have flourished from that point on.

Good Luck.

Have you tried using D.W.Simpson? Entry level positions can sometimes be filled by people with no experience and no exams.

Does D.W.Simpson have any entry-level positions in Canada? It seems like all the positions need 4 yr (or above) of experience.
