Hi everyone,

I have an interview next week, and while I am decent in Excel, I'm not quite proficient. By this I mean that I can make pivot tables, write if statements, v/hlookups, etc., but sometimes I need to sneak a peek at my reference book to get it done. [I don't know VBA or Access...gulp.]

What is the likelihood that they'll throw a spreadsheet at me during the interview and ask me to demonstrate proficiency in Excel? I keep waking up with a cold sweat about that.

Thanks!

Quite unlikely. They expect you to have experience in excel and experience programming, but not necessarily VB (although, it would be great). If you're smart enough to pass an exam or two and have experience programming, then they can conclude that you can pick up what you need to know about excel and access quickly.

Just had aforementioned interview yesterday. No Excel questions beyond 'do you have a decent knowledge of it?'. Thanks for the advice. I kinda feel silly for worrying so much about that, but better to overprepare, I guess.

Even "proficient" people make liberal use of the help feature, internet, books, etc.

A good investment you can make for yourself is John Walkenbach's references on Excel. I recommend his Excel 2003 Formulas book and Power Programming with VBA. Lots of tips and tricks and example code.
