Hi, i am strongly interested in becoming an actuary and would liek some help in deciding what type of course i should take in university.

I am currently in college(6th form) and am taking Further maths, Maths, Economics and ICT. i hope to get full A-levels in Further Maths, Maths and Economics and an AS in ICT

Is it better to take an acturial science cours or earn a degree on a pure maths course, e.g. MORSE at University of Warwick. I think i would prefer to take a maths cpurse as if later or i decided or realise actuary isnt for me i can choose a different feild in mathematics.

All suggestion are helpful

Thank You Kpstall

hey,

i just finished school and i am planning to do actuarial science too.according to my observations, some of the people who major in mathematics, end up being actuaries.i dont know but i was thinking that majoring in math would be good, and then you can master in Actuarial science..............

i'm still in a fix so if you get any brilliant idea, let us know.

you dont need to take math (pure) to be an actuary..
you can take eco major/accounting major/ basically anything,,
but it would be very helpful to take act sci as your major if you want to be an actuary.
courses that i found pretty much must be taken as an actuarial student are:
accounting (financial-managerial)
macro&micro-economics
calc 1-3
statistics
actuarial science (if you hv declared your major)
business law, finance, management, etc.

others are gen ed./elective courses i guess..

and a question to anyone out there?how do you think the act sci market will be in the next like 10yrs?do you think we are needed now more than ever?i mean,it is a good career and many people are getting to know that.so what do you think will be happening in 10yrs in an upcoming actuary's world?

i will transfer next fall, act sci major.
that's something that i'm affraid too..
there are many people want to be actuaries,,and i dont know if actuary market will still be as big as now or not..
but i always find many opening in craiglist for fresh graduated..besides you only need to pass 2 exams to be able to work actually,,so,,it wont take so long,, as long as there're still insurance companies out there,,there will be actuaries...hihihi:laugh:

Try looking up the history of Actuaries, where it came from and what not. You'll understand that job security and demand is up there with doctors. The demand for actuaries will always be there. As long as there is financial risk involved, actuaries will always be around.

I understand that maybe more people want to do it... What other job are you going to get that is as good that people don't want?
