I have taken high school algebra, algebra 2 and college algebra and statistics. Would i need to take a full calculus course before starting to prepare to take the P1 Exam or would i be ok just studying the GUO Study guides?

You need Calc for it, for sure. Lots of Intergrals and Derivatives of probability density functions.

Actually Cliff,

you could learn derivatives fairly quickly with simple web pages like wikipedia.

As for density functions, there is no mention of them in Calc I, II, or III.

Check out this seminar. If you feel comfortable doing these type of problems, then you should be OK.

I do have to say that it is going to take a lot of hours to prepare for this test. If you're starting now, without calculus nor probability (calculus based), you should be planning to take the test around Spring 2009 at the earliest. If you're extremely dedicated and can grasp concepts easily, then I would say January 2009. This is just my opinion, you/others may disagree. Either way, I wish you good luck and hope you can meet us on Saturday's study group.

You are right there, density functions were a new concept for me, but a lot of questions require you to integrate them over a region, which is Calc I and II.

Yes, it is calculus based statistics... but the calculus involved (integrals and some differentiation) is quite basic.... its some of the first calculus you ever learn in high school/college.
