first time actuary; long time mathematician

Hi. I'm Adam. The title of this thread was my quick way of saying that I'm just beginning to take the actuary exams. I'm registered to take Exam P in July. But I've been a full time mathematician/math student for 6 years. I'm currently a Ph.D. student in math, and I have a master's degree in math.

well that sounds like a lot of math to me. but just in case, get an actex or ASM. if you can do/understand most of the problems then you are good for the first test.:coolman:

    good luck with your exams!
I'm pretty sure having done 6 years of math will really help you on the exams since you are ahead of many people already

I just passed P, and have a Ph.D. in math. I still highly recommend using a manual, although you may find the study time recommendations aren't all that relevant... It's not that the math is hard, but it's best to be totally familiar with the exam format and question style before you enter the exam room.

Good luck on the test, and even better luck finding a job!

I never expected to just walk in and ace the exam without any practice. My knowledge of abstract algebra, analysis and topology hardly comes to bear. I've been doing as many old exam problems as I can find. Thanks for the kind words.
