Where should I put this in my resume? (if anywhere)

    Hi folks.

My last quarter at college is coming up. I will be taking my first exam (P/1) in January. I wrote my resume with the assumption I will pass P/1, simply because it sounds like it's impossible to get an actuarial job without at least one exam. I won't be sending out this resume until after I take the CBT. I graduate in late March, with any luck I can line up work fairly quickly.

As my resume states, I have two degrees, one in math and one in physics. In the course of my physics degree I ended up taking a class in data analysis. The university describes the course in the following way:

"Introduction to error analysis, data handling, and numerical solution methods in physics using computer programs such as KaleidaGraph, Mathematica, and LabView."

I think this would be something useful to put on my resume. It doesn't seem like actuarial work uses Kaleidagraph or LabView since those programs are more for lab work, but data analysis in general seems important. I am thinking of sticking it into the "professional skills profile" but am having trouble wording it. Maybe "Familiar with basic methods of data analysis" or something along those lines?

How does the resume look by the way? I know I'll only have one exam, the economics VEE, and no experience - but I am also willing to travel pretty much anywhere in the U.S. for work (preferably a big city on the West Coast). The more places I apply the better my odds...

    1. You should probably remove your personal information from everywhere in the pdf if you don't want people to know who you are.

    2. You are correct in waiting to send out after you take the CBT. You can be 100% sure that you will pass the exam but until you have the actual pass, you are a liar to put it bluntly.

    3. The order that I put my resume back in the day was: Exams, Education, Relevant Experience, Relevant Coursework (don't over do it there), Skills and that's the order I prefer to look at the resume. I want to know what exams you have passed, when you will be graduating, what relevant skills/information do you know for exams / possibly for the job. Everything else is side noise that we can talk about during the interview. So far what you have listed as "Relevant Work Experience" is not really relevant at all. It utilizes the skills you will need to have but you are not applying to tutor/teach anyone anything.

    4. I would normally put "Data Analysis" or "Data Mining" under Relevant Course Work. Since you don't have that, you can put it under Professional Skills I guess.

Don't worry, my real name isn't XXXXXXX and I don't actually live at 123 fake street in Nowhere, WA :smiloe:

Agreed. However, it sounds like it's okay to put "Exams: P/1" right after the CBT result (the day of the exam) even though it's unofficial because it's almost 100% accurate. I don't have to wait for the official SOA list of people who passed do I?

Then perhaps I should just remove this section entirely and put all relevant skills under the "professional skills" section? Maybe move those two jobs into the "other employment" section I have at the bottom?

    Is it R.L. though?

You can put "preliminary pass" or something to that effect.

Sounds like a better idea. A good way to have an interesting interview is to put a few select things about your job(s) that will allow the interviewer some room to ask you questions.

Hmm, how'd you find the name? Whenever I download the PDF it shows up at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, just like I changed it to. I did a name search on my original document and my name doesn't pop up. Is it nestled somewhere in the document name?

I didn't say it was anywhere in the body...

Found it, though took me a few minutes to find the solution. Should be fixed now.
