Tips on how to study for MFE

    Hi everyone,
I am wondering for those of you who have been successful in passing MFE, what have you done? Did you need to alter your study habits from P and FM in order to compensate for the increased level of difficulty? I am hoping to have 2 sections in the ASM manual each week completed with one month for practice exams in time for the May sitting.

    Thanks,
    Rebecca

Haven't taken it yet. I can only offer what I'm doing. I've studied for this exam twice as hard as P/FM. You really need to know the material inside and out - people who took the exam last sitting commented on algebraic difficulty of problems, so knowing your approaches ahead quickly allows more time for manipulation. In regards to your studying approach, certain chapters in ASM are much more difficult than others. I would suggest breezing through the first half of the material (PCP, Binomial Trees, B-S) so you have more time to focus on the more difficult chapters (Brownian motion, and ugh Interest Rate models). Just my two cents.

Thanks for the tips! Now, one more question. I know you said you haven't taken it yet but so this would be merely speculation, but since this sitting is the first time it will be offered CBT, do you think we can expect some changes with regard to that in how the exam is structured or on the level of difficulty?

It will be 3 hours, 30 questions (~5 expected to be pilot questions). No one can comment on the level of difficulty, though past data from C moving to CBT showed an increase in %eff passing after moving to CBT, in comparison to the three sittings preceding the transition. Prepare for the worst, and be happy if it's easier.
