    Talking engineering student

hi, i am a junior in biomedical engineering major and economics minor at rutgers. i recently became interested in pursuing a career as an actuary. I have taken micro/macro economics, but no statistics or corporate finance courses yet, since the ones that count for credit require too many prerequisite courses to be taken. I had a couple of questions:

What should i do to prepare for the CAS transitional exam to obtain VEE credit?

Is this a good career path to choose given that jobs in the biomedical engineering sector are so limited for Bachelors degrees and that i have a strong interest in finance?

Lastly, i have completed four semesters of calculus (I-IV), what should i do to prepare myself for the 1st and 2nd exam?

    ~thanks :smiloe:

Well CAS exams are only being offered one more time in August. After that you have to go a different route (college course, NEAS, Actex).

It's hard to say if this is a "good career path." That's something you must decide for yourself. I left engineering at rutgers early on to pursue a math degree to work towards an actuarial career (mainly because I was more interested in math than I was taking all of the physics, chemistry courses required by SOE). While actuaries make a good salary, I wouldn't expect it to be as high as a biomed engineer.

You can always take Probability Theory (I wanna say it's Math 377...but it's been like 4-5 years since i've taken it at RU), but if you have a math background (with calc 1-4), I'd say just get a good study guide (ASM, Actex, BPP) and teach yourself. It'll be better for you to get in the habit of doing so than relying on courses (since you'll be teaching yourself in higher level exams).

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!
