What is the difference between passing and effective passing in the SOA Exam pass/fail rates? Preliminary pass "based on preliminary anlysis" at the test site and final pass/fail designation?

What is the difference between passing and effective passing in the SOA Exam pass/fail rates? Preliminary pass "based on preliminary anlysis" at the test site and final pass/fail designation?

Passing = "total number of passing candidates" / "total number of candidates"
Effective passing = "total number of passing candidates" / "total number of candidates who received a score of 1 or higher"
"Preliminary pass/fail" = "final pass/fail"; the chances of going from "preliminary fail" to "pass" are incredibly small; the chances of going from "preliminary pass" to "fail" are nil.

i always wondered what that meant, too. how does one find that out? i hadn't seen that explained on the soa website anywhere!! not doubting you, irish, just wondering how regular folks get that info. :smiloe:

If you don't get at least 50% of the passing score, you get a 0. The effective number writing would then be everyone who didn't get a 0 ... which means they got at least a 1.The number of candidates writing, the effective number writing (those who achieved at least 50% of the passing score), the number passing, the percentage passing, and the percentage effective passing for the respective examinations is as follows:
