I'm just a kid intreasted in being an actuary, so I don't know how the industry really is. What kind of things can an actuary do where he is self-employed?

Generally companies who will hire an actuary as a consultant will require that the actuary have a significant amount of experience (or work for an actuary who does) and may require credentials.
It's possible to get consulting work for lower level tasks, such as actuarial software testing, but even that will generally require some experience.
Your best bet while "just a kid" is to try to get internships where you can see the kind of things actuaries do.
