    Symbol question

    Could someone please tell me what an equal sign with a dot on the top left and a dot on the bottom right means.

    Reference -ASM manual (9th edition) page 268 section 5 - interest measurement of a fund.

    I think it's an approximation symbol, e.g. when using only two terms of a taylor series expansion.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_symbol look on there, I think what you are referring to is "defined as"
