    55 years old career change

I am 55 years old with a BS in Mathematics in 1979. I have been working in the IT field for the past 30+ years. I understand that it takes about 5 years to become and Actuary. I know its going to take hard work to make it, but I am in great shape and health and I really miss using my math skills. I work out 5 - 6 days a week.
What do you suggest as a plan of action? I would like to go to graduate school. Or should I take class that will prepare me for the tests?
    Thank You.

Hey! Since no one is answering you, I'll help you out. I don't think having a graduate degree will increase your prospects that much. From what I hear, you should look into passing the prelim exams. You have experience in IT so the computer science skills employers are looking for you probably already have (if you're used to using VBA in Excel and the like).

There are plenty of online sources you can utilize for practicing for the prelim exams. From what I understand, focusing on the first two or three will help you to get into the field.

    Here are some resources:

    1) The Infinite Actuary

    2) Coaching Actuaries

    3) Be An Actuary

    4) Society of Actuaries

    5) Casualty Actuarial Society

The first two are basically online courseware and programs focusing on teaching the curriculum to beginners like us.

The third link is a website that gives information about the field and helps you to determine the extent of your interest; it presents info on the day in the life of an Actuary, salary stats, practice questions, curriculum, etc..

The fourth and the fifth links are websites for two of the actuarial societies in the US.

Look through them and determine for yourself what the best course of action is. If I were you, I would work on the exams first, though. Have a great day, and good luck to you.

    Thanks.

I believe you are right about graduate school. During my google search, I have not found any site that said going to graduate school was a good ideal. Thanks for your response and thanks for providing me with links. I am planning on taking a class in calculus, since actuaries are supposed to use a lot of calculus.
    Thanks again.

    Greg.
