Hi, I was trying to see how the APVs in the illustrative life table (which can be googled.... Not sure If I can post links). I'm checking because my teacher gave me a spreadsheet with a modified life column and asked us to calculate reserves for each year. I thought I should calculate V by calculating ax and Ax, finding the payment, and then using either the prospective or retrospective approach. Anyways, I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

The problem is, at the end of the ILT, it doesn't give you lives after age 110. It gives you (q110) = .73187 and (l110) = 11, so we can find (l111) = (11)(1- .73187) = 2.94943, or about 3 (assuming (q110) was rounded). But then how would we calculate (A110)? I want to do it by only using the life column. (and, by the way, the probability 3/11 couldn't have been gotten just from the life column).

The closest I can get is:

(8/11)/(1.06) + ((3/11)(3/3))/1.06^2 = .9288

Where we assume (incorrectly, probably) that all 3 people die in year 111.

the number given in the table for (A110) is .92515.

Is there a better way to calculate Ax when only given the life column?
