Government Actuary, Entry-Level... Is this a good move?

I only have 2 exams and my VEE college courses completed. I applied for an entry-level job for the federal government. The chief actuary e-mailed me back about a position, and I just spoke with him today. Very interesting job- it combines P&C and Life since it deals with FHA mortgage insurance. However, no exam program. I would be on my own, paying, preparing, and studying for the exams. But also, I would not be pressured as much to pass exams quickly like I would be with a private company. Has anyone, or any of your friends, worked for the government? Is it a good opportunity? Thanks.

Be very sure you want to do this. In-between industry jobs, I've worked for four different state insurance depts. Now nearing retirement, it's fairly secure, but still very low pay.

Government jobs for actuaries are generally awful: low pay, poor or no exam support, little actuarial training. Worse still, it can get you the "regulator" label that makes it hard to get any other actuarial job. Federal is probably slightly better than state for pay & security, but government is a really difficult way to start an actuarial career.
I thought this WAS a real job
