Interview Question: Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?

November 5, 2018 | By More

Have you ever been asked this question? How did you answer?

Prepare for that Actuary job: Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years? Why Interviewers Ask This Question.

Just to be clear, few interviewers truly expect you to be able to predict where you’ll be in 5 years from today. Instead, they use this question to get a better understanding of your goals and how their position fits into your overall career path. If your five year plan is complimentary to the position they’re offering, you are more likely to be proactive, work harder and take the position seriously. Interviewers want to know that success at this position would directly contribute to your long-term career strategy.

How Do You Answer This Question?

Do Some Research

Like any interview question, its worth doing your homework and coming prepared. Research typical career paths you could eventually take if you accepted the position. This information may be available under the career section of the company’s website, or by looking at current positions held by former employees on LinkedIn.

Be Broad While Emphasizing Your Interest in the Position

Ambition is great, but hiring managers typically want to know that you’ll be in the position for at least a year or two before moving on. So be sure to show your enthusiasm for the current job opening during the interview.

Focus on a Skill

Not all jobs lead to higher positions. If this is the case, use this question as an opportunity to discuss your skills. Explain how you’d like to become an expert in your field by crafting your particular skills through years of experience.
