Leading Actuary Employment and Career Site Comments on General Employment Trends From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report

Atlanta, GA (September 11, 2017) — The US economy added 156,000 jobs in August, a 17 percent decrease in the number of jobs added in July, according to preliminary numbers reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, September 1, 2017.

“August employment was unaffected by Hurricane Harvey since the survey was conducted before the storm impacted Texas,” said Jay Rollins, owner of, a leading career website specializing in actuary job postings. “However, the coming months could see the jobs reports impacted by Harvey and subsequent hurricanes Irma and Jose, specifically to the number of jobless claims.”

Unemployment for the month of August reached 4.4 percent from 4.3 percent in July, while the number of unemployed persons was little changed at 7.1 million. “The seasonal unemployment rate has remained around 4.4 and 4.3 percent since April. Earlier in the year, unemployment was as high a 4.8 percent,” said Rollins.

The two main industries containing the highest concentration of actuaries as determined by the BLS saw mixed results. The insurance carriers subsector, which employs the majority of actuaries, lost 300 jobs while the scientific and technical management subsector increased by 3,100 jobs.

Across all industries, gains occurred in manufacturing, construction, health care, and mining. Employment growth has averaged 176,000 jobs a month thus far this year, on par with the average monthly gain of 187,000 jobs in 2016.
